In all of his travels, Xhu always found the South the most troublesome and most dreary. A dead place with no life, the South drained the happiness out of most travelers who came through here. The grasses had long since given up trying to grow and the trees just seemed like they were too sad to live. Bones littered the whole area, scorched marks from fire never healing, and the silence of death so loud and palpable, one would surely go crazy if they stayed too long. Xhu could actually remember a time when the South very well could have been the most flourishing out of all the lands in Alyssus. Blessed with ample amounts of sun and rain, the South had been the main provider of many staples throughout Alyssus prior to Osirus taking the life out of the land. Storm clouds that never brought rain, only thunder and lightening, hovered over head constantly so that it cast a gray shadow over everything. Even the shadows seemed weak around here. Birds of skeletal frames and demonic eyes, Aryes as they were known, flew over head over any living thing, waiting for it to die so they might come and rend the flesh from the bones.
The South was a depressing and dangerous place. Rocks were jagged with un-use, the faint smell of methane and other unpleasant oders from corrosion and death hovered in the air. Lava rocks littered the land as with dangerous creatures. The creatures ranged from rabid wolves to poisonous snakes that would strike at every chance they could get. The animals, insects, and even the plants around here seemed ill-tempered. It was not wise to touch anything, let alone eat any mushrooms or lintels from the ground for fear of poison.
All around, the South was not a place one would wish to live. And yet, there were those who still hung onto the memories of old and desired nothing more for their dead land to return to normal. Perhaps Xhu was tired of traveling these dangerous lands; constantly having to look over his shoulder, bury the dead, and giving medicine to those who couldn't pay. Bassette had asked him to come with Laties to make sure he stayed alive. But anyone who truly knew Xhu would not find this reason a good one for him to risk his neck over something like this. Maybe Xhu was finally beginning to feel that there was nothing else that could be done. He would finally have to come to this damned temple.
The Nocens Atrum temple was both a demonic and majestic building. Built ages ago by the first Shade, it was a place of both good and evil. Surrounded by the hatred of Nocens Atrum, it was a place which was to seal away the evil God. It had worked, until some how he managed to escape. The temple itself had many floors, reaching to the sky like a demonic castle. Surely human hands had not made its curving and circular form as it rend the clouds in the sky. Its black form was littered with windows, darkened by the lack of life within the temple. The main door stood before the Ancient and rogue. Its large form was outlined with red jewels encrusted with soot and age. The height of the temple only hid the true rooms beneath the surface.
Xhu looked up the jagged steps that led up to the door. This temple was easy to spot from any one place in Alyssus due to its large form and lack of trees in which to block it. He glanced at Laties as he let the heavy iron box fall from his shoulders. A cold, bitter wind picked up, probably from the storm growing over the desert.
"We're here. Are you truly prepared for entering this place in your state of mind?" Xhu asked, his voice taking on darkness and weight.

“Are you calling me a mad man?” Laties asked in offended tone as he stepped off of one of the many jagged rocks with a small grunt. He stood up, staring up at the forbidden temple with a smirk of defiance. “Wow, this may be bigger than the palace.”
For a moment, he stood there, staring at the temple for minutes without a word. “My mental state is the same as any other time, always on the edge.” He grinned as he began walking up the steps and paused before looking up at the sky with a small look of… Regret? “I’ll be back… Don’t worry about me.”
A small breeze flew past them as a pair of transparent arms appeared around his neck and was soon followed by a petite body clinging almost desperately to his body. The form of a young girl, her entire form could barely be seen. His guardian, one of the goddesses of Gurella, Goddess of the Wind, Lady Winry. Her face was buried against his bare collarbone when she slowly looked up with a desperate look.
You mustn’t, I will lose you. her voice was faint and soft. A monster lurks inside, the monster will take you from me, from your family! I cannot enter with you! I cannot protect you! You cannot call for me!
A small smile formed on Laties’ face as he ‘hugged’ her before walking through her and held his hand out. There was a barrier, a wall, the border that kept those who were not shade outside. “I’m here…” He murmured softly as a shadow like hand suddenly wrapped itself around his hand and slowly moved up his body as though it was devouring him alive. Once his body was covered in a light shadow, he took a step forward, jerking back slightly as the border attempted to push him back out but the shadow pulled him closer to the temple. Within seconds, he was completely in the temple with a small look of achievement as the shadow began to fade. He turned back and motioned for the ancient to follow, “Come on or I’m leaving you.”
Laties! The goddess cried out as she crumbled to the floor, trembling. Her eyes watching as rogue disappear into the building before she looked around before fixing them onto the ancient. Oh, please… Protect him, ancient… Please keep Laties here, please. I’ve failed him… Please in Bassaette’s name, keep him here. she murmured before vanishing.

Xhu watched as Laties was drawn into the barrier by a shadowed figure. Xhu tilted his head slightly as he began to ponder the many possibilities in to just who was pulling Laties' strings. Obviously, it dabbled in dark magic. But why an elemental user? Why Laties? Was it once his affiliation with King Osirus? Did Osirus place this demon in him? Was it the dark Lord Eltana? So many possibilities and in the same time, so many conclusions could be pulled from it. By why didn't Laties fight harder? Perhaps he is drawn to the sword based on the human desire to be stronger or was it just the demon inside him billowing up with so much power. It would certainly be harder for Xhu to differentiate between Laties and the demon so close to the dark magic center.
Oh, please… Protect him, ancient… Please keep Laties here, please. I’ve failed him… Please in Bassaette’s name, keep him here." Xhu stared blankly at the desert wind goddess with a blank stare until she disappeared. Staring at the point in which she vanished, Xhu shut his eyes for a moment. Fate will certainly be mad at this recent turn of events...But Bassette's wish is my wish and I must comply with her wishes. She is truly honored. No prophet should or would meddle in the afairs of men...But she truly does not like the future and is trying anything to change it...If she asks me to help mold the future...I must, he thought to himself before turning back to the barrier.
"Yes, Laties...though, I would chose different words," he said as he came up to the barrier. He pondered it for a moment, then smirked. He placed his hands on the barrier for a moment, testing it. As he had thought, it registered him as a Shade. Of course, Xhu himself did not truly know if the Ancients were once Shade or some other creature. All he knew as that he was going to break this barrier. Taking a small step back, he suddenly clapped his hands together. The barrier resonated with the sound, giving off a silky ripple before he clapped his hands again, shattering the barrier. It crumbled like glass. Xhu stepped in, but not a moment too soon before the barrier suddenly repaired itself, taking a splice of Xhu's pants with it. Glancing back, he let out a chuckle before turning to follow Laties.
"Well now, let's get going..."

Laties nodded as he descended the first few steps of the temple, his eyes busy looking around admiring the many paintings on the walls. “My… The Shade were quite the artist.” he whispered in awe as he ran his fingers over the aged paintings, careful not to damage them. “It’s a shame most of them died out, I would’ve bought a piece of art in a heart beat. That is, if I had a wall to hang it on.”
A small chuckle escaped him as he said that before a small shout escaped him as his foot went through the floor. He fell to one knee as his leg fell right through the crumbled stone floor, his hands slapping against the floor with a painful smack. Several seconds passed before he began to chuckle nervously as he slowly moved to pull his leg out but paused when he hard the floor beneath him cracking even more. “This can’t be good.” he murmured.
Slowly he closed his eyes, brows furrowed as he attempted to concentrate before a frown formed on his face. The elements no longer spoke to him, their voices vanishing the moment he entered the temple. “Shit…” He grumbled as he looked over at the other and offered a small smile, “A little help?”

Indeed, the Shade had an eye for art, even if it was depicting different images of Nocen Atrum. If there was one true frighteneing thing to know about the dark god, it was the fact that no one knew exactly what he looked like. Even the legends failed in detai. But the pictures all depicted him with one outstanding quality; the four arms in which he could wield the swords. Some paintings had him a handsome man with a long flowing mane of black hair. Others depicted him as a hellish creature adorned with scars from fighting with his sister. Some even depicted him as insect-like demon in which he had huge pincers issuing forth from his mouth. Either way, these paintings had about them a quality no human could imitate. Xhu was busy looking through these paintings when he heard the floor crumble. Turning around, his eyes rested on Laties.
Walking over to him, he grabbed Laties' hand and pulled him to his feet. Looking about at the broken and uncared for temple, Xhu shook his head slightly.
"This temple and its inhabitants wish to cause us harm. We must proceed with extreme caution. The sword," he turned around to look at Laties, "It will be below an altar, in a cellar." He took a few steps away from Laties and paused. He became as still as stone as his eyes wandered through the shadows. Then, without warning, a scorpion's tail came lashing out. Xhu jumped into the air, his ankle barely missing the poisonous tip of the scorpion stinger; the stinger ripped yet another hole in his pants. Kneeling by Laties' side, he glanced up at him.
"You positive you wish to continue? This temple will not only test your body, but your mind as well..." He said, the scorpion hissing loudly as it crawled out from the shadows. The scorpion was easily as big as a large dog. Its swollen eyes locked onto Laties and Xhu, its bronxe body shimmering in the meager light the outside provided from the windows. It clicked its pincers threateningly.

He stared at the overgrown insect for several minutes before turning his head to look at the other with a small smile on his face. “Honestly, stop worrying about me and my mental state. You forget I someone no-one wanted to meet on the battle field and my mental state is always on the edge.” He chuckled as he picked up a fairly large stone and bounced it in his hand before tossing it towards the back of the scorpion.
The stone landed on its back and the creature hissed angrily as it’s tail lashed out to attack the stone. His smirk grew as he watched the insect stab it self before pulling its own stinger from its body. “Funny thing, scorpions are known as one of the most poisonous creatures around that could kill a fully grown man.” Laties said as he crossed his arms in front of his chest and watched as the insect slowly collapsed onto the floor hissing. “Yet they cannot tell from friend or foe and will even attack themselves.” He chuckled as he trotted past it, easily avoiding the weaken stinger.
Without another word, he began walking down the steps leading further into the temple as thought he knew exactly where he was going.

Xhu smiled as Laties simply outwitted the scorpion with its own innate desire to destroy. He watched as Laties walked off, then turned his gaze to the dying scorpion. He knelt in front of it, gazing into its swollen red eyes. Xhu could feel its anger and its frustration. But there was something missing in this beast. It was the original soul Lumen had given to it. Every creature and every plant had been given a soul, a breath of life from Lumen. But for some disturbing reason, this scorpion was void of this. It did not fear death nor was it sad at its death. It was if it were a living shell full of nothing but anger and chaos. Xhu reached forward slowly, his ashen hand hovering in front of the scorpion for a moment. But the bronze creature lashed out in a final attempt, hissing. Xhu shook his head and stood as its twisted emotions left its body. Not even the harbingers of death could find a soul to drag into Hell. The ghoulish harbingers glanced at Xhu whom shook his head. The harbingers looked at him for a moment, tittered between each other in argument, then slipped back under the tiles of the temple.
Xhu stepped past the body and quickly caught up to Laties. He could feel it now. The suffocating lack of life and souls within this temple. It was a disturbing feeling, as it left Xhu feeling odd and uncomfortable. But his painted smile blocked his emotions as he walked slightly behind Laties, walking down the curving steps that would lead them deeper into the temple.
"There are no souls here..."

As he traversed the corridors of the temple in search of the two intruders, Baphomet deeply regretted once again having a mortal body.
Sure, it was nice having a body again—especially such an attractive, healthy one. Even though he was thankful for having such a lovely vessel, he regretted taking it so soon. Because he spent most of his time in the Nocens Atrum Temple as a spirit, wandering around didn't affect him physically; the seemingly endless staircases and lengthy hallways didn't bother him in the least. But now that he was able to feel fatigue, the long walks wore him out very easily.
"Damnation! This is too much for me," he grumbled in a rather feeble voice as he sauntered down a long, dark hallway. He had little strength left to carry himself, and was running low on the provisions he was carrying in his backpack. He could swear that his feet were bleeding and horribly blistered from the hours of walking through the voluminous temple. Baphomet muttered a few profanities to himself, cursing the Shade for making such a ridiculously large temple.
Letting out a profound sigh, he dropped on his behind and leaned against a wall. Taking a little rest wouldn't hurt, he thought. After all, what possible use would he be to Laties and his guardian if he didn't have the strength to walk? He'd just be extra weight! The Prophet of Malaise was so worn out that, after about a minute of sitting down, he drifted off into a pleasant sleep...
Unfortunately for him, the sound of footsteps broke him from his slumber about three hours later. Baphomet stood up and stretched, letting out a long, exaggerated yawn. His lips curved into a small smile as none other than Laties Luhma and his companion came into view.
"I bid you welcome to the bowels of the Nocens Atrum Temple, Ex-General Laties Luhma and friend. In case you can't tell because of the body I'm wearing, I am Baphomet, the Prophet of Malaise. Because this level is riddled with all sorts of traps and abominations, I've decided out of the kindness of my heart to safely lead you to the Odium Sword's Sanctum. Lord Remarque awaits you both, so I hope you're ready for a fight."

"Prophet?" Laties repeated as he slowed to a stop and moved most of his weight to one foot and placed his hand on his hip. "Baa... Bafo... Bafomete? What a strange name, how do you spell it?" He asked in a sincere tone before chuckling, "Forget it, I don't believe in the power of prophets, much less the prophets themselves. Besides, I still think you were cuter without the body." he said as he wipped his hand on his pants and held it out to shake.
The rogue faintly remembered seeing the Disembodied Form in the temples around Alyssus speaking of the prophets. "But nonetheless, hello. I'm Laties, no need for formalties. And thank you for that little spark of kindness in that dark soul of yours to guide us through but it looks like you're barely able to stand on your feet. Tired? Need a lift? I'll carry you and you can lead us from my back."
Kind-hearted fool, amazing he hasn't gotten himself killed yet. He paused before looking over at the ancient, "Speaking of names, we haven't been properly introduced. I'm Laties and would you like to be carried since you've been around my wonderfull prescence longer?" Despite the life in the temple, Laties seemed to always speak with a burst of life.

Baphomet... The name was like a sour taste in Xhu's mouth. Although he didn't show it, Xhu would have rather preferred that the parasitic Prophet hadn't shown up. But he had guessed that if Bassette had wanted to do something with Laties, one of her "siblings" would want to stick their fingers into the mess as well. He stared at the chosen body of the Prophet and smiled inwardly at the thought that now Baphomet would have to deal with human weakness if he chose to stay within such a body. Why something so weak? Why hadn't he gone after something with more power and stamina? If Xhu had been a parasitic deity like Baphomet himself, he would have chosen anything else aside from a human. Even an animal would have been more suiting.
As Laties spoke to the Prophet, Xhu couldn't help but chuckle as Laties mentioned the fact that they hadn't been introduced. Xhu often forgot that humans had simple minds and didn't recognize people based on their souls and smells. For example, Laties must have had a bright soul at one point before it was shadowed by whatever was controlling him now. Like the desert, he had the smell of sand, earth and air. But now, with whatever dark entity was controlling him, he smelled strongly of sulfur and death. It wasn't pleasant, but Xhu was not the one to complain.
Smirking, he held up his hands. "Its quite alright, Laties. I do not need to be carried. I'm well suited to travel. Aside from that, my name is Xhu," he said simply. Side stepping Laties so that he was now in front of Laties with his back to him and the Prophet, Xhu crossed his arms over his chest and glanced back at them.
"Well, shall we continue? We should not stop for long. There are many things in this temple which will take advantage over our slow pace. If you are to guide us, deity, then let's get a move on it," Xhu said.

The small smile that was gracing his lovely stolen face vanished once Laties began rambling on. So he didn't believe in the Prophets, did he? He could easily prove his identity by temporarily phasing out of the body, but he didn't need to prove himself to some stupid sand monkey.
"You need not lecture me on the dangers of this temple, Ancient. I know this shrine like the back of my hand," he said disdainfully as he began walking, quickly increasing his pace so that he passed them both. Not wanting to fall victim to any demons or traps, however, he slowed down after passing them and stayed close.
"Besides," he added, "you are both strong, capable men, correct? Surely you would have no problem dealing with anything we might come across. Except for whatever Lord Remarque has guarding the Odium Sword, of course..."
Oh! He had completely forgotten about having uncovered Eltana's true identity. In truth he was none other than Lord Nikanoru's younger brother. Indeed, that would explain where he'd be getting the materials for his fleshy abominations. But should he impart the information to Laties and Xhu? He didn't see why not; he told that Order twit, after all. Normally he wasn't too fond of sharing information with people, but such a bombshell would undoubtedly make them pale in surprise.
"Speaking of Lord Remarque," he began once again, dark eyes drifting up to the ceiling above them. Though he couldn't make it out because of Adrian Ravenwood's limited vision, Baphomet remembered the frightening paintings of Nocens Atrum that decorated the obsidian ceiling; "...there is something about him that I've recently discovered—something that you may find quite surprising..."
Baphomet paused briefly for effect, smirk returning to his soft face, "...He is actually Eltana Magrace, younger brother of Lord Nikanoru. Just thought you'd like to know."
Not even glancing back at them to see their faces, Baphomet stopped at a large door at the end of the lengthy hallway and pushed it open, revealing a large obsidian labyrinth. The entire maze reeked with the overpowering stench of bloodied flesh and sulfur, and was covered in a heavy mist.
"Beyond this labyrinth is the Sanctum of the Odium Sword. Oh, and be on your toes—I'm sure that Eltana has a few friends in here waiting for us."

Laties moved his hand to pinch his nose in attempt to save himself from the smell onto to begin gagging as he attempted to breath through his nose. "Oh god." he coughed as his other hand went to his mouth. "Now I have the smell in both my nose and my mouth." he spat.
Travel on the maze not in it, the danger lurks inside it not on it. Be worried about what guards the door, get to the sword!
His legs buckled underneath him as his hands flew to the sides of his face to cover his ears. Gagging on the smell while trying to sooth the sharp ringing in his ears. The voice had gotten stronger, sharper, closer. It no longer faded near the end of its sentance and was not as clear as someone speaking right next to him.
Release me... Give me my body!
"Shit... You're as impaient as a child." Laties groaned as he slowly stood, coughing as his eyes looked over the maze. "I hate mazes, I never could pass them when they were on paper. What makes you think I can pass a real life one?" Laties snapped to no-one as he looked around for a moment before he took off running towards a crumbled part of the stone wall. Quickly, he scrambled up, slipping and slidding creating cuts in his arms and stomach whenever he slid back down.
Several minutes passed before he finally managed to make it on top of the narrow wall and squated on top of it panting. Another series of minutes passed before he turned his head to look at the other two and grinned, "Come on! The sooner we get there the faster I can go home!" he shouted before turning around and began walking cautiously on the wall while he looked for walls that led to the doors in the distance.

As far as how many Ancients were left in the world, Xhu was pretty sure he was either the last one or close to it. A race that had long since died out, a new Ancient was born very rarely and sporadically in the time line. Xhu was the youngest of the Ancient clan that he knew of and the last Ancient to roam Alyssus. So why was he sticking himself in danger knowing that he could very well wipe out the existence of his kind if he died? Well, he hoped that Bassette knew what she was doing by sending him after Laties. But Xhu could sense that getting through this temple would be a true test on both his mind and soul. After all, Ancients lived off the land and the souls it provided. Here in this temple, the few souls that did thrive were tainted. For Xhu, walking in a place with a lack of souls is like starving. Or, in the case of this temple, it was like eating spicy food and receiving a very intense heart burn.
It was not a pleasant experience. But any discomfort was well hidden by his ashen face. Walking through the temple, all he could do was to simply keep his eyes forward. He walked some what behind Laties and Baphomet know. Walking too close to the Prophet was not something he wanted to do. The Prophets own soul was so overwhelming, it gave him a terrible headache. Putting space between him and the Prophet was the only thing he could to keep from losing control.
So Eltana and Nikanoru are brothers, are they? "Fascinating...Two totally ruthless men, brothers in arm. Its no wonder Eltana can get his bony fingers so entangled in this business..." Xhu muttered, more to himself than his comrades. The smell of the sulfur and death was pungent and repulsive. Truly, this temple was a work of death and darkness. As they came to the labyrinth, Xhu stopped and watched Laties. He was so much like a child, it was a wonder just how he first became Osirus' General, especially concerning the ruthless talent other Knights under him had.
"That's cheating Laties..."

Shortly after Laties jumped up onto a nearby wall and began looking around for an efficient route to the doors, a dark, ashy fog slowly manifested, consuming everything in plain sight. The already nauseating stench of sulfur and carrion flesh increased tenfold almost instantaneously, causing even Baphomet to cover his mouth in disgust. Their presence had obviously been noted by whomever or whatever was watching over the labyrinth, and it seemed like the mysterious guardian had no intention of let them go on by unscathed.
After managing to recover from the initial whiff of the horrible stench, Baphomet opened his mouth to say something, but quickly closed it and looked around distraughtly. He heard something - something very, very wrong. The sound was practically indescribable - it was that otherworldly. If he were to attempt describing it, he would illustrate it as a disturbing cross between pained, woeful cries of a neglected baby and the ear-shattering shriek of a cat whose tail was just chopped off. In his thousands of years of life, Baphomet had never heard anything like it.
And then he saw it.
At first it was nothing more than an unnatural figure delineated by the heavy mist; once it emerged, however, its grotesque nature and nightmarish form were unveiled. A chimera of two former humans, binded together at the sides with some dark sorcery. The two maggoty corpses were obviously - and fortunately - dead, considering that each body's veins were dangling from holes ripped into the flesh and their skin was white and rotted. Both bodies lacked eyes (though it was hard to tell for the one on the right, seeing as its neck was snapped and bent backward), but seemed to see the intruders with utmost clarity.
That wasn't what bothered Baphomet, however. The presence he felt within the two corpses, the dark entity that was acting through them - it was the same presence he felt whilst delivering the prophecy to that Order buffoon. It was none other than the Yearner of Woe, acting through an abomination created by either Eltana or Nikanoru.
Letting out the same horrible wail, the corpse on the left pointed its sword-like bone of an arm at Xhu and Baphomet, rotted flesh falling from the decayed limb to the ground. Joining its "brother" in wailing, the right pointed its sharp limb in the direction of Laties. The sin against Lumen intended on attacking.
"Well, I suggest that you two get fighting," Baphomet said, words slightly muffled by the hand he was still pressing against his stolen mouth.

“Oh, what fun.” Laties grinned as he knelt down slightly to pull a pair of daggers hidden in his boots slowly. Silently, he wished that he has brought a sword or a spear, one his of his tools of trade. Sadly, he had given his only good sword to the prince and his spear was left outside when he entered the temple. “This place smells as bad as the blood chamber.” he commented as he stood a small step forward, getting ready to lunge forward. Just as he was about to lunge forward as small gasp escaped him as a flash of desperation went through his body. His body trembled, a thin layer of sweat forming on his brow as he held the two daggers in front of him defensively.
The sword, get the sword, get the sword! Those were the words that flashed in his mind, his hands shook slightly as he gripped the two daggers tightly, his mind picturing the hilt of the cursed sword. His hands yearned to feel the metal hilt, the coldness of the hilt that was begging to be enveloped in his warm hands. His body yearned to unleash the locked up hatred inside him. The parasite was almost awake.
“The sword… The sword…” His voice started out low as he stood a step forward, his body waving slightly. “The sword, get the sword… I need the sword…” Laties murmured as he began taking steps forward, slowly getting faster until he took off in a dead sprint. “Get out of my way!” Laties snarled as he attempted to tackled the grotesque body. His body literally sank into the rotting flesh for a moment before he slid to the floor with a wet thud.
Laties’ body shook with a fit of gags before his body was thrown into one of the many halls of the maze. His body slammed up against the wall, causing what air he had left in his lungs to escaped him. Falling to the ground with a painful grown, his eyes snapped to the sound of the creature following him. “The sword…” The words escaped him as he scrambled to his feet and began a mad dash through the maze, occasionally he ran straight into the wall with a smack but he did not stop. He continued running, not caring if he scrapped his body against the wall as he ran, it was like his body was possessed.
