.Name. Shujaa Nyoni-Oga
.Nickname. Ja
.Age. 15 years
.Birthday. June 7
Race: Akarukaruka. More commonly called the Akaru, they are a group of bat worshippers and former humans. So devout they were in their worship that they sought a way to be more like the bats. Their search led them to Hila, the trickster, who gave them that way; in return, they gave up their humanity. But Hila did not make them bats; instead, he made them grotesque combinations of human and bat. Standing at the height of about three feet, the Akarukaruka are more bat than human, but with a more human-like build to their bodies. Their heads are that of a bat’s, but a great deal larger than is proportional to their body, in order to carry a human’s brain; the Akaru are still very intelligent, the problem, however, is that their brains and bodies don’t fully cooperate. The Akarukaruka are capable of human thought, but not fully of human speech and action; their motor skills are only slightly more advanced than a bat’s, and they are capable only of simple words and speech. As far as being blind as a bat goes; well, they aren’t. They can see and hear the same as any human, despite beady eyes and larger ears; though their sense of smell is greatly increased. While the Akarukaruka started as a small group, they were still able to reproduce and thus have grown substantially.
Allegiance: Order of Lumen
Profession/Rank: Shujaa has only recently left his people to join the Order; thus, he has no job, but he hopes to become a private among the Order soon.
.Hair. Shujaa doesn’t necessarily have hair; he has fur, shaggy brown fur, to be more exact, covering his entire body, minus his ears and wings.
.Eyes. Ja has bat’s eyes, like the rest of his people; they’re small, beady gray eyes with small black pupils. Little else to say there.
.Physical Description. Shujaa, while a normal, unremarkable member of his kind, is likely to be one of the most exotic things many people of Alyssus will ever see. And this not because he’s a unique Akarukaruka—he’s not—but rather just because he is an Akarukaruka. The Akaru as a race are rather a bland bunch; there’s not much variety other than slight changes in fur color. Apart from that, they’re pretty much all the same; they tell each other apart more by scent than sight due to this fact.
But as for Shujaa in particular, well, the only thing that might make him unique from the others is his shaggy brown fur; at least, it would, if there weren’t others with the same color fur. His fur is a mottled mixture of tans and browns, like a couple others in his colony, with the tans being on his chest while the darker colors dominate the rest of him. His fur covers everything except his ears and wings, which are both made of black skin, effectively making him similar to a bay colored horse, though color is where the similarity begins and ends.
He stands at about three feet tall, common height for his colony, and has the same stout build of every other Akarukaruka he knows. His chest and arms are muscular, a testament to the fact that he, like most of his colony, does a whole lot of flying to keep building those muscles, while his legs are, well, less than muscular from neglect; Shujaa doesn’t do much walking. But, then, neither do many others of his colony; he lives by the examples of the others.
Instead of hands or feet, Ja has a bat’s claws and talons; hardly what one needs for handling tools, or for walking. The claws and talons themselves are relatively sharp and of a decent size, and their dull gray tries not to stand out too much; better than solid black or gleaming white, to be sure. Speaking of gleaming white, that is the complete opposite of his fangs; sharp, yes, clean, no. Darkened from past meals, his many fangs are a rather putrid yellow, but this is perfectly acceptable in Akarukaruka society.
His wings are by far his most impressive feature; no different from the other Akaru, of course, but impressive in any human’s eyes; thin, leather like material supported by a framework of gray bones which stretch from his wrist outward, and connected from wrist to armpit to knee along his arms, sides, and legs, they are perfectly capable of keeping him in flight, even if he has to work to accomplish it, hence the muscular arms and broad chest for large lungs and lots of muscles. The wings are capable of folding to allow his arms to hang at his sides, or stretching to some extent of movement, but he is obviously hindered by their presence whenever he isn’t flying.
Of course, knowing that his wings are connected to his body along his sides and legs must leave one questioning as to how he manages to wear pants. Well, he doesn’t. The Akarukaruka go without clothes in their colonies, and while Shujaa tried—for the comfort of the humans and other races—to wear at least some pants, he failed miserably and has given up. But, fear not; due to the way the Akaru are built to be similar to bats, his lack of pants can’t be considered indecent exposure; and that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

.Likes.
-Bats; being of a group of extremist bat worshippers, Ja has quite the obsession with them.
-Flying; it’s so much easier than walking.
-The Order of Lumen; his simple opinion is that the order is good and the king is bad.
-Any race other than humans.
-Insects; for eating, of course.
.Dislikes.
-Eagles, hawks, and other predatory birds (or any predators, for that matter) that prey on bats; despite the fact that he’s too big to be eaten by most of said creatures, he still hates seeing bats killed.
-Walking; it’s so uncomfortable for his kind, and so very tiring.
-King Osirus; he’s bad.
-Humans; they caused the war (from what he’s heard, all of them are bad).
-Anyone who doesn’t believe that he can achieve anything; he’s quite the unbridled optimist, and doesn’t like anyone who tries to get him down.
.Goals. Shujaa is too simple minded to have more than one goal at a time, therefore his only current goal is to join the Order of Lumen; he can’t think any further than that.
.Fears. Shujaa’s irrepressible bravery means he doesn’t fear much; he doesn’t understand that he should fear anything. But, I suppose you can say that he fears be turned away from the Order, or at least that he doesn’t want that to happen.
.Personality. Shujaa is certainly not the brightest of all people in Alyssus and beyond; in fact, he’s not even close. Being a member of the Akarukaruka already gives one certain disadvantages in that area—being intelligent and being able to act and speak intelligently being two different things in this case—and Shujaa never was one of the brightest in his colony. He certainly tries, though; the Akaru never look down on those who aren’t of keen intelligence, seeing as even the real bright ones can’t seem to get their bodies to cooperate enough to do so, therefore Ja never had anything to kill his self esteem. As a result, Shujaa has the soaring high spirits and self esteem of a highly imaginative child who doesn’t know the difference between reality and fantasy; and, really, that perfectly describes what he is. Even for an Akarukaruka he has a very simple intelligence, and the conflict between body and mind that his kind have certainly isn’t helping.
This lack of intelligence and flat out gaping hole where common sense should be has left Shujaa to be quite the irrepressible little bat-man. Ever seen a child who swears they can do something no matter what you tell them? Yeah, imagine that, but in the form of a 15-year-old 3-foot-tall bat creature. That’s Shujaa. He believes he can do just about anything as long as he tries; this not out of arrogance, but out of a complete lack of understanding of the line between possible and impossible. His is the “never say never” attitude of a highly unrealistic optimist.
But for all this, something good has come of it; Ja is incredibly brave because of this belief that he can do anything. Sure, this will likely get him into trouble, but it also allows him to do more than your average coward (*coughAmadeuscough*). Fear isn’t in his vocabulary, and is an unfamiliar feeling to him; in addition to any sense of danger, making him quite the asset to anyone who needs a practically mindless servant.
Of course, you don’t even need him to be your servant to get him to do something for you; Ja is quite he trusting type. He’s gullible and naïve to the extreme, not understanding the way the human world works and thus believing just about anything he’s told. If he trusts a person even the slightest, he’s likely to do as they say, and most people he trusts without question, unless you give him a reason not to, which is quite the feat.
Though, there is one group of people he’s less apt to trust: humans. Having heard all the wrong Osirus and his humans have done, Shujaa is ever so slightly racist towards them, believing them all to be bad as he has learned no different. He only knows what word has reached his colony, and this is hardly an adequate source of information to draw any conclusions from, but Shujaa knows no different. As far as he’s concerned: “humans bad, others good,” in his simple way of speaking.

.Family.
.Father. Uwingu Nyoni-Oga
.Mother. Chini Nyoni-Huru
.Siblings. None
.History. Shujaa has had a very ordinary life; well, ordinary for his kind, at least. Born to the Oga family of the Nyoni colony, Ja was born to live in the Akarukaruka high, middle, and low society; the Akaru don’t differentiate, or at least his colony doesn’t. The Nyoni colony is a relatively small colony living in a relatively small cave in the northern mountains, and, being such a small, remote colony, they all have to stick together to survive, and thus are quite close, not having any separation of their families. So close are the individual families that the Huru and Oga, along with others, often mix; hence the union between Uwingu, Shujaa’s father, and Chini, his mother. And, since this practice is so common, his birth was perfectly acceptable and completely normal; he was no different from any other child.
Now, the Akarukaruka, while they were once human, live more like the bats that they so worship than like humans. Sleeping during the day and hunting at night, the Akaru aren’t so very different from any old bat. Only difference is that they have to eat a lot more; other than that, they socialize among the colony, teach their children basic things (only slightly more complex than the teachings of bats to their children) and make sure no other colonies encroach upon their territory. Such was the way of Shujaa’s childhood.
However, things in the colony began to change when word reached them of the war in Alyssus; other colonies sent messengers to their neighbors carrying news. And each messenger carried with him a false message as well: a supposed mutual agreement of the colonies to each send warriors to help the Order in order to safeguard their own existence. Of course, this was completely false; a mere trick to attempt to weaken other colonies in order to increase territory for themselves. Basic instinct in most animals.
Most colonies thought along the same lines, each one trying to fool others, but none of them actually sending any. Except, that is, for the Nyoni colony. Naïve and kind hearted, the Nyoni sought to help themselves and their neighbors as they helped each other and send warriors to fight in the war. The elders of the clan sent word to each family asking whether or not anyone could be spared. Most declined; the families were too small to spare anyone.
However, when Shujaa caught word of the war and the request, his simple brain thought only of the adventure of such a mission; he volunteered himself. It turned out he was the only one of his colony to step forward, as none others volunteered themselves or anyone else to be spared. The elders were pleased with this outcome; as much as they hoped to help themselves and other colonies, they understood the need for warriors at home, and knew that at least they were doing their part by sending young, capable Shujaa; sure, he wasn’t the brightest, but he had spirit!
So it was that Shujaa left his home cave with the blessing of the Nyoni elders and of both the Oga and Huru families. He was told to travel south and to seek out any member of the Order he could and ask to join; then to assist in any way he could. He was instructed to be weary of humans, as they were the cause of the war and most likely bad people. Taking these instructions to heart, Ja began his long flight south, stopping every day to sleep and hunting as he went along at night. He’s made slow progress, however, and has only just reached the forest at the base of the mountains; needless to say, Shujaa still has a long way to go and much work to do.
