S•Y•P•H
The S•P•E•C•S~ Strange fawn-like creatures with the lower half of a goat (haunches, hooves, and a tail) and the upper half of a small man. Their skin is a dark grayish blue color with tribal markings on the upper chest, arms, and forehead. Fur covering the hanches, legs and tail is a dark reddish brown. Hair of the same color can be found on the head and face in different variations according to the individual. Eyes are a very pale ice blue, teeth are brilliantly white, tongue, hooves, and claws are black. The face is small and pointy. Each Syph has dark gray-black ram horns on either side of the head.
The S•T•O•R•Y~ Syph are, to put it quite plainly, corruptors. Their only job is to find mortals with pure souls and use any means of destruction and discord to convince them to commit a crime and sign away their souls. To find these people, Syph are embued with the power to sense a person's morality. Once they accomplish their objective, they use a special dagger to make a slice in the skin (it's become custom to do so in the middle of the palm, making the mark of the corrupted a scar across the hand), which allows the soul to escape. This process leaves the corrupted fairly in tact (physically), but without a soul, meaning that they have no chance of re-entering the cycle of life and death and are devoid of the ability to experience love or joy.
Each soul collected goes into what is called the Puhl, a vast source of energy from which the Syph draw their power. If the Puhl somehow becomes low, every Syph suffers a loss of magical ability and weakness until it is restored to full level.
Syph are not born, they're created. When a Syph is made, it is assigned a quota of souls that it must collect before it can advance in rank and move up to the next level. When a Syph does reach its quota, the last person that they corrupt becomes a new Syph entirely, taking their place among the lower ranks. This is the only case in which a corrupted person is harmed, because their mortal body ends up dying. Because of this, they are soulless creatures. They are also immortal, staying on earth for as long as they wish. In fact, the only way for a Syph to reclaim its soul from the Puhl and re-enter the cycle of life and death is to advance to the highest rank possible, in which case they must corrupt a young child who has yet to commit any sin. Because of the difficulty of this task (and the fairly large amount of magical power that high ranking Syph experience) most Syph simply stay where they are, and there have only been a few records of a Syph being freed.
The I•N•S•I•G•H•T~ In general, Syph are not physically strong creatures. However, they are swift, dodgey, and quick witted, which is usually enough to get them out of tough situations. If it's not, they can always use their magical abilities, which allows them to use and control all types of magical arts, including teleportation (in which case they disappear in a puff of smoke).
Personality wise, each Syph enjoys his or her own individual traits. Many of them are very serious and sometimes malicious creatures (though this can be attributed to their lack of soul). Some Syph have been known to be somewhat merry, and others still retain certain attachments from their mortal lives. Syph are not capable of love, and while they can entertain sexual experiences, they can produce no children.
